Bob Russell graduated from Cincinnati Bible Seminary in 1965 and became the Senior Minister of Southeast Christian Church in 1966, a new church with 120 members. When he retired in 2006 the church was one of the largest in America with over 18,000 people attending four weekend worship services.
As Bob considered his retirement and noted the numerous incidents of disastrous leadership transitions in American churches, he worked with the Elders to implement a deliberate plan to successfully pass the baton of leadership to his successor. This book is about that transition.
In it you will learn about the challenges all organizations face when the reigns of leadership are passed from one leader to another. You will learn about potential pitfalls as well as ways to leverage the transition to actually strengthen the church. This book should be mandatory reading for all church leaders.

Great book!
Excellent book loaded with wisdom on how to transition well. Something that is applicable in both a church and vocational setting. We all can be better served by planning transitions and this book provides exceptional practical advice on how to do so.
Very informative, quick read and works for Church or any organization with leaders in transition. All of our Church board thought it very useful. Maybe you do not have a 10 year plan but the best information that came out of this book was that it is easy to do transitions wrong and hard to correct the mistakes.
This should be required reading for every pastor and every elder in every church! It is a fascinating read and most importantly gives a blueprint and an example of "how" properly hand off the baton to a successor. We all need to remember that "there is no success without a successor."
Bob Russell covers the difficult subject of the succession of leadership in ministry with words that are both heartfelt and helpful. I appreciate the wisdom he shared from his own struggles and success as well as the stories he wove together of others' attempts at ministry succession that ran the gamut from thoughtful and deliberate and humble...to self-willed disaster. Russell's book serves as an excellent primer on a difficult process. Highly recommended!
